Two Chinese Kraak blue and white plates Wanli (1573-1620)

each of lobed form, the centre painted with two horses in a garden or a bird standing on a rock by a chrysanthemum, enclosed by a border of interlocking tulip heads and lotuses, (2), 20 and 20.5cm diameter, The Private Collection of Michael George Kuczynski (1941-2025), Cambridgeshire. Michael, The tulip became a popular motif on porcelain produced for the Dutch market, subsequently influencing Chinese porcelain production at Jingdezhen. Introduced to Europe in the 1590s by Carolus Clusius, head of the Leiden botanical garden, the flower quickly became a symbol of luxury and fascination.
