TWO HANDLES OF A CEREMONIAL HERMINETTE Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Massim region, Milne Bay Province Wood with an aged, dry patina H. 51 cm – W. 19.5 cm and H. 55 cm – W. 16.5 cm Provenance: - Harry Beran Collection. Handles of adzes intended for ceremonial or at least symbolic use, whose heads do not allow for the attachment of a functional blade. The handle ends in a beautifully carved head forming the pommel. Given the similarity in shape, size, and style of the object and the carving of the head, it is likely that these two objects were carved by the same artist.
