Two Roman Brass & Bone Cosmetic Implement

Roman, Imperial period. A pair of small personal implements from the Roman toilet kit, both of a scale that fits comfortably between two fingers. The shorter piece is cast in leaded brass, its openwork suspension loop rising above a shaft decorated with beaded collars and pierced bosses, tapering to a flat, spatulate point; the loop allowed it to hang from a ring alongside tweezers, ear scoops, and probes. The longer implement is turned from bone, swelling to a rounded terminal at one end and drawing down to a fine tip at the other, its surface worn to a warm honey polish through handling. Both were likely used for cleaning and shaping the nails or for applying unguents and cosmetics, the everyday equipment of Roman grooming rather than anything ceremonial. Roman grooming implements of this kind travelled in bundles, several tools strung on a single iron or copper-alloy ring so they could be carried at the belt or kept in a small box. Excavated examples from Britain, Gaul, and the Rhineland regularly pair looped nail cleaners with tweezers (volsellae) and ear scoops (auriscalpia), and the type is common enough in Romano-British contexts that it has been treated as a marker of provincial personal display. The decorative beading and piercing on the alloy example are functionally unnecessary, which is precisely the point: cleanliness of the hands was a visible social signal, and the tool that produced it was worth ornamenting. Bone implements of comparable form served overlapping purposes and are catalogued variously as cosmetic applicators, hairpins, and stylus-like probes; without a securely excavated parallel, the boundary between these functions stays porous.
