Exciting Unfunded 2012 Casascius "Bitnickel" 5 Bitcoin Unfunded 2012 Casascius "Bitnickel" 5 Bitcoin. Series 1 and Series 2 Type. Nickel Plated Brass. MS-65 (PCGS). Unfunded and non-loaded. With a face value of 5 BTC, this large-denomination Casascius issue offers an exciting opportunity for collectors, underscored by the $4,800 realized for a similar MS-65 example in our April 2022 sale. Satiny luster brings out alternating shades of pewter-gray and platinum-white as the coin turns under a light. The softness at the obverse motto VIRES IN NUMERIS is characteristic of virtually all examples from these series. This piece likely originated among the unreported quantity of unfunded "bitnickel" planchets that Casascius creator Mike Caldwell made available for enthusiasts to fund themselves. These followed the funded Series 1 Casascius 5 BTC coins, which researcher Elias Ahonen dates to January 2012. Priced at 6 BTC at the time, or approximately US$33, the initial coins carried a gold-colored hologram. A silver-colored hologram was subsequently introduced with Series 2 around April 2012.
