The Sautrog escapement is a rare and early form of cylinder escapement, generally regarded as a precursor to the developed cylinder escapement. It is traditionally associated with Thomas Tompion, who is credited with having developed this form of escapement around 1695, before George Graham subsequently improved the construction around 1720–1725. The term “Sautrog”, literally referring to a trough-shaped recess, relates to the characteristic construction of the balance staff.
