Unusual Earrings Converted from Victorian Elements, c. 1900 & later

It is in the nature of beautiful objects made from luxurious materials that they are reworked over the generations. What seems indispensable to one generation may seem terribly old-fashioned to the next. As early as 1896, the German ladies' journal Der Bazar wrote: "the true lady of the world in London has almost as much to do with her jeweler as with her milliner. Soon she buys a new piece, soon jewels are set differently because fashion is changing, soon she needs a headdress made of luxurious stones, soon diamonds have to be set on a necklace made of velvet - in short, a visit to the jeweler is almost indispensable." The solidly crafted, high-carat gold elements that form the showpieces of these earrings were created around this time. Each element features a turquoise cabochon and a natural pearl between twisted gold rods. Originally, they were elements of a bracelet, which were popular and worn in large numbers at the time. In more recent times, they were reworked into earrings. The simple gold hooks are finished with a shiny gold ball at the top and thus blend harmoniously with the antique elements.
