Unusual Vintage Ring in Ozier Design with Sapphire Set in Gold, ca. 1960

At first glance, the possibilities for setting a gemstone in gold seem limited - and yet the ideas of goldsmiths from different eras never cease to surprise. The gold setting of this elegant sapphire ring, for example, looks as if it has been woven from willow twigs. The idea of transferring the wicker basket motif to other materials can be found as early as the 18th century in the field of European porcelain, where the Saxon Royal Meissen Manufactory and later the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin provided plates and cups with so-called "Ozier reliefs", not unlike the surface of this ring. These Ozier reliefs, which depicted the simplest material in the most precious way, were emblematic of the ideal of a bucolic lifestyle à la Marie Antoinette, who famously played shepherdess in fine linen dresses and had an entire estate of simple farmhouses built especially for this purpose. A courtly pastime, then, that was meant to glorify simple country life - admittedly without foregoing the luxuries of one's own reality of life. We also see here an artistic imitation of a simple wickerwork in precious material and thus a reminiscence of the world of ideas of the 18th century. A fine, medium blue sapphire cabochon forms the center of the ring made of 18-karat gold. The magnificent gem lies as if in a woven basket, held only by the delicate engravings of golden rods. The ring, dating from around 1960, is beautifully preserved. An independent appraisal confirms the quality of the materials used.
