With a history of mining and appreciation as a gemstone spanning millennia, the emerald is one of the most important gemstones in cultural history. Emerald mines already existed in pre-Christian Egypt, where the coveted stone was extracted. These were the stones that the ancient author Pliny described in rapturous terms: “No colour is more pleasant to look upon, for we gaze with desire upon green herbs and foliage; but the emerald all the more, because nothing is greener that can be compared to it.” Pliny also called the stone limoniades, after the nymphs of meadows and flowers. Such an emerald is the protagonist of the ring presented here from our workshop. Its cut and setting are based on principles developed over centuries to emphasise precisely these qualities. The emerald, weighing approximately one carat, is fashioned in the classic step cut. Its inclusion pattern is unusually beautiful. Our emerald is characterised by lively inclusions, poetically referred to as a “jardin” (French for garden). In addition to fine inclusions, a darker inclusion is also visible, immediately confirming the magnificent emerald as a natural stone. Our gem setter placed the coloured stone, which arrived loose to us, into a newly crafted white gold setting. We discovered the setting in the USA, in Chicago, at a small workshop. Its design is inspired by jewellery from the 1920s and complements the large diamond with 22 smaller brilliant-cut diamonds. An independent report confirms the quality of the materials used.
