VAEAKE STILT BRACKET Polynesia, Marquesas Islands 18th / 19th century Mi’o wood (Thespesia populnea) with a glossy patina (old varnish) An old chip is missing at the lower left, and there are fillings at the top of the crest and on the phallus H. 33 cm Provenance: - Yann Ferrandin Gallery, Paris - Jean-Marcel Gayraut Collection, Paris - French private collection Stilt stirrup, known as a toko (or titoko on the island of Uapou, or vaeake). Used as a footrest on stilts, the toko is very often carved with a tiki figure standing in the “Polynesian pose”—with hands resting on either side of the stomach, powerful legs slightly bent, and the body leaning slightly forward. Here, the fully tattooed body is covered with incised lines, and the inside of the footrest is carved with concentric diamond patterns and a motif that may represent a stylized headdress. The face is adorned with large tattoo glyphs on either side of the mouth. The stilts’ stirrups were used during stilts-jousting competitions by young champions; these events appear to have been linked primarily to funerary ceremonies. Many of these stilts were brought back to Europe as curiosities and were often hung on walls like coat hooks!
