Val Saint Lambert - Charles Graffart & René Delvenne...

Val Saint Lambert “Luxval” Rosalin Serving Dish – Art Deco, Belgium, ca. 1935 No reserve price A beautiful and distinctive Art Deco serving dish by Val Saint Lambert, produced as part of the celebrated Luxval collection, one of the most remarkable ranges of Belgian decorative glass from the 1930s. Executed in Rosalin pressed demi-crystal, the piece features an elegant geometric form with spectacular radiating fan motifs extending from the centre. The sculptural central handle, sharply defined relief decoration and delicately scalloped border give the dish a particularly architectural character, perfectly reflecting the aesthetics of the Art Deco period. The delicate Rosalin colour has a particularly beautiful warm peach-pink hue, leaning more towards soft peach and apricot tones than traditional pink glass. Depending on the lighting, the glass reveals subtle golden and amber reflections, giving it an exceptionally warm and luminous appearance. The combination of geometric relief and translucent glass creates a beautiful play of light, transforming a functional serving piece into a highly decorative object. The design demonstrates the remarkable quality of Val Saint Lambert’s pressed-glass production. Equally suitable as a serving dish, table centrepiece or sculptural decorative object, it would make a wonderful addition to both Art Deco collections and contemporary interiors. The model is documented in original Luxval catalogues and was also represented in an exhibition dedicated to Val Saint Lambert’s Art Deco production at the Musée du Verre de Charleroi. An identical example in amber-coloured glass was displayed in the museum exhibition, as illustrated in the accompanying photographs. This museum reference, together with the original catalogue documentation, provides valuable historical confirmation of the design. The dish bears the moulded “Val Saint Lambert Belgique” signature. The piece is preserved in very good vintage condition, with no chips or deep scratches. Only extremely minor signs of use are present, entirely consistent with its age of approximately 90 years. These are barely noticeable and do not detract from its beauty or decorative appeal. A particularly elegant and well-documented example of Belgian Art Deco glassmaking, combining sculptural geometry, a beautiful warm peach-toned Rosalin colour and the characteristic brilliance of Val Saint Lambert demi-crystal. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Some bubbles and small imperfections are normal in items made of pressed glass and crystal Will be carefully packaged and well protected
