Valentino White (Positano, May 2, 1909 – Rome, April 29, 1985) was a respected Italian painter and photographer, best known for his evocative landscapes and seascapes of the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and the Gulf of Naples. Biography and Training Born in Positano to a father of English origins and a Caprese mother, he showed from a very young age a natural talent for drawing. Although his father opposed formal academic artistic studies, White trained through an indirect kind of schooling guided by his grandfather’s watercolors and oil paintings, the English painter James Talmage White. In his youth he moved to Capri, where he worked as a professional photographer and deepened his study of nature and the island’s rocks from life. Throughout his life he settled in various Campanian towns, including Torre del Greco and Ravello, before passing away in Rome in 1985.
