Valentino White (1909-1986) - Capri

Valentino White (Positano, May 2, 1909 – Rome, April 29, 1985) was a respected Italian painter and photographer, best known for his evocative landscapes and seascapes of the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and the Gulf of Naples. Biography and Training Born in Positano to a father of English origins and a Caprese mother, he showed from a very young age a natural talent for drawing. Although his father opposed formal academic artistic studies, White trained through an indirect kind of schooling guided by his grandfather’s watercolors and oil paintings, the English painter James Talmage White. In his youth he moved to Capri, where he worked as a professional photographer and deepened his study of nature and the island’s rocks from life. Throughout his life he settled in various Campanian towns, including Torre del Greco and Ravello, before passing away in Rome in 1985. Style and Themes Valentino White’s artistic production is distinguished by: • Preferred subjects: glimpses of Mediterranean villages, flowering alleys, seascapes, storms at sea, landscapes of Capri, Anacapri, and Ravello. • Techniques used: He demonstrated extraordinary mastery in oil painting (often on a small panel or plywood) as well as, particularly, in watercolor and mixed media on paper. • Distinctive traits: Contemporary critics praised his pronounced chromatic sensitivity, freshness, and intuitive vibrancy, capable of synthesizing the poetry and atmosphere of Southern Italian landscapes with a confident and personal stroke. Art Market The painter achieved good public success starting from the 1950s, exhibiting in several shows in Rome. Today his works regularly appear on the secondary market, handled by leading Italian auction houses such as Wannenes Art Auctions or through consultancy and estimates at Casa d’Aste Arcadia. His lots maintain steady interest among collectors of 20th-century landscape painting.
