Vallauris - Marie-Christine Treinen (1930-2003) - Vase...

Magnificent and very rare tall vase (22 cm) in ceramic with expressive and colorful imagery, characteristic of the work of Marie-Christine Treinen (1933-2003), a famous ceramic artist who left a mark on Vallauris (notably after working at the Atelier Cérenne before founding her own studio on Rue Sicard). For a Marie-Christine Treinen vase, this 22 cm dimension is a superb size for her creations, which are often smaller or more often accessories; it also features a very rich and colorful decoration. This is a vase not to be missed that will delight collectors of Vallauris objects and of Marie-Christine Treinen, who has a fine side and for any ceramic and interior decoration enthusiast. Description of the vase: - Its shape: Elegant, timeless baluster silhouette. The vase has a stable base that gently flares to a bulbous, voluptuous body, before subtly narrowing to form a straight and short cylindrical neck. - Material and Technique: Made in clay/earthenware, the decoration is entirely created using the demanding technique of engraved or incised decoration with engobe (sgraffito style). The brown earth contour lines separate areas of color in slight relief, creating a unique tactile texture and a striking visual depth. - Colors and Décor: The vase wears an abstract, lush, and dynamic universe, typical of the cubist and biomorphic influence of the mid-20th century. The geometric motifs (squares, triangles) on the neck respond to an organic and moving graphic on the body. The color palette is vibrant and luminous: it blends bright red, deep ultramarine blue, sunflower yellow, and emerald green, all contrasted by a pale beige/powdery pink background with slightly satiny reflections. - Decorative potential: With its appearance as a true “Arty” sculpture, this vase with strong visual personality integrates beautifully into a Mid-Century Modern interior (set on a teak sideboard) or a Bohemian Chic-style decor. Thanks to its vibrant colors and expressive motifs, it can also serve as a bold centerpiece in a contemporary or minimalist interior, instantly bringing a touch of warmth, artisanal authenticity, and a gorgeous color contrast on a clean piece of furniture. The 6th photo will help you envision it in a contemporary interior. Description of the box: - Creator: Marie-Christine Treinen (1930-2003). - Model: Baluster-shaped vase with vivid polychrome enamels and an abstract decoration on a light pinkish background that characterizes her works. - Style: Middle Century – Modern mid-century / Vallauris School (Atelier Cérenne). - Dimensions: * Height: 22 cm * Width at the widest point: 14 cm * Circumference: 49 cm * Neck diameter: 7 cm * Weight: 920 g - Era: 1950-1960. This piece fits perfectly in the second half of the 20th century, typical of the 1950s-60s, the golden age of bold artistic ceramic from the Vallauris school. - Place of origin: France, Vallauris. - Signature: Signed "M.C Treinen, Vallauris." Signed by the artist’s hand under the base, incised with a pointed tool in the clay before firing. - Material: Ceramic (earthenware), glaze. - Condition: Very good condition, no cracks. Note one discreet superficial glaze skip at the upper edge of the neck which does not affect the solidity or the superb aesthetic presence of this rare collectible vase (see last two photos for this small glaze skip). A few signs of normal use inside the vase, entirely consistent with its age and authenticity. The vase has been superbly preserved. This work is stunning and characteristic of Marie-Christine Treinen, and it is especially a model that is rarely seen; vases from this artist are scarce and difficult to find, so do not hesitate to bid because it is magnificent. Artist biography: Vallauris, after the war, was an important center of art ceramics: many artists, potters, and earthenware/stoneware workshops were active there. The Atelier Cérenne, among others, played a role in this effervescence. This postwar Vallauris ceramic workshop employed many decorating painters. Founded in late 1943 by Charles René Neveux, the Atelier Cérenne produced utilitarian and decorative ceramics of high quality, highly varied due to the many decorators who worked there. Resold in 1958, the workshop operated until 1984. Today, the building is listed as a historic monument. Marie-Christine Treinen was one of the most inventive decorators at the Atelier Cérenne, where she worked from 1945 until 1960, then opened her own workshop on Rue Sicard, in the former premises of Jacques Innocenti. In the 1990s, she became a familiar figure at "La Bergerie," considered one of the prettiest shops in Vallauris, where she would spend long moments looking at the displayed objects. She sometimes bought a necklace of ceramic beads, which she particularly loved. She was the sister of Françoise Claustre, who died in 2006 and was known for having been held hostage in Chad for 33 months from 1974 to 1977. Born in 1930, she died on October 27, 2003. Marie-Christine Treinen was a renowned ceramicist active in Vallauris, mainly in the mid-20th century. She is known for her distinctive designs, often featuring decorations on ceramic pieces such as bowls and vases. Her work, mainly created in the 1950s and 1960s, continues to be increasingly sought after by mid-century ceramic enthusiasts. Her highly recognizable decorative style is characteristic: vivid polychrome enamels, abstract or stylized decoration, often on light or colorful backgrounds with plant or abstract motifs. Her works are characterized by strong colors: yellow, orange, red, green, blue, pink, black, sometimes with engobe or a pale background plus glazed decoration. The motifs are abstract, sometimes inspired (or compared) to a Miró/Chagall-like style, a comparison that shows the free spirit of her shapes. The decoration is often busy, free, with stylized forms of imaginary animals or plants. Marie-Christine Treinen is regarded as a figure of artisanal ceramics in Vallauris in the postwar period. The artistic and craft environment of Vallauris fostered innovation in shapes, enamels, and decoration, which is reflected in her free and colorful style. Her works continue to be known, studied, and sought after by collectors.
