Vanity travel set - .935 silver - travel necessities

The “necessaries” emerged in the 17th century as travel kits for the aristocracy, containing toiletries, writing and sewing items. In the 19th century, they became fashion accessories for the bourgeoisie. The object is a portable case designed to hold the essential tools for small sartorial repairs while traveling. • Materials and decoration: The main body is silver with a white guilloché surface (a carved wave motif) and a delicately hand-painted floral decoration with roses. The mounts are in silver, as are the closing clasps and the edging. • Contents: Inside there is a brass bobbin wound with colored cotton thread and a pair of steel scissors, perfectly housed in their compartment. • Era and style: The type and decorative style suggest a German (or continental European) production from the late 19th century, in line with the tradition of manufactories such as Meissen. The combination of 935 silver, guilloché enamel, and hand-painted floral decoration is typical of German or Austrian production from the late 19th to early 20th century. The “935” hallmark was used to guarantee a fineness higher than the sterling standard (925), often for objects intended for export.
