Colored confetti in black opal glass • engraved wavy edge • Bohemia (attrib.) • ca. 1920-1930 - Glass Presentational dish of twenty-five centimeters in diameter, whose entire outer wall is strewn with hundreds of colored glass fragments on a black background; discreetly, as is customary with Bohemian opal glass. A large presentational dish in opal glass, probably Bohemian, mouth-blown around 1920 to 1940. On an opaque black inner layer lie hundreds of colored glass fragments in red, orange, white, cobalt, yellow and green. A colorless overlay covers them and makes the surface mirror-smooth. The edge has been hot-drawn into ten waves, the colors continuing over the top edge. A “Now buy” price is also listed for those who want to acquire it immediately without waiting. In one glance: Material: calc-rare glass, mouth-blown; black inner layer with inlaid colored glass fragments under a colorless overlay Dimensions: h 8 x diameter 25 cm Weight: 835 grams Brand: no factory mark, signature or label; pontil scar ground smooth and polished Dating: ca. 1920-1930 Origin: private collection, Netherlands Description and context: Low round coupe on an attached cylindrical foot ring. In the middle bottom lies the flatly ground pontil, polished straight through the decoration: handiwork on the blowing tube. The edge is hot with the tongs drawn up into ten regular waves. The decoration is opalescent glass, sometimes called “end of day”: the glowing glass ball was rolled over loose colored chips and blown out, so the chips stretch. The movement on the base can be followed as a spiral. The chips are uniform, without core or rings, and thus not millefiori. With 835 grams over twenty-five centimeters the wall thickness is just over three millimeters: thin-walled handcraft. Condition: Good to very good. Edge: all ten waves intact, no flakes observed. Glass mass: a few small air bubbles and light color blending, production-specific to opalescent glass, and no damage. Underside: light signs of use on the foot ring. No cracks, hairlines, or restorations observed. The red specks in the photographs are reflections from the studio lights. See the images. Offered as a decorative object, not intended for use with food. In the interior: Fits into an Art Deco, mid-century, or eclectic interior, on a coffee table, sideboard, or mantelpiece. Under a spotlight, the colored fragments stand out against the black. Shipping: Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, and for fragile objects a double box. Always insured with Track and Trace. See feedback from previous buyers. Attribution and sources: No maker is claimed. Loetz can be ruled out: that factory produced iridescent Jugendstil glass and plain Tango glass, not polychrome opal glass. Welz, Kralik, Rindskopf, Rückl and Steinwald all produced this genre side by side, without any of their repertories showing this decoration. Murano is also a consideration, on a virtually identically decorated vase; however, this piece lacks the aventurine and the murrine of the Venetian Carnivale work.
