Velda Flandria - Wereldkampioen - Freddy Maertens - 1976 - Cycling jersey

This is the iconic rainbow jersey (world champion shirt) of the legendary Belgian cyclist Freddy Maertens. He wore this jersey after his victory at the road World Championship in 1976 in Ostuni, Italy. At that time he rode for the legendary Velda-Flandria cycling team. This is the World Championship to which the Velda-Flandria shirt shown belongs. In a nerve-wracking final, he rode at the front alongside the Italian Francesco Moser. Moser even offered Maertens a gigantic sum of money during the race to let him win, but the Belgian refused resolutely and sprinted convincingly to his first gold World Championship medal.
