Verreries Doyen - Champagne glass (8) - Cocktail Service KURSAAL - Crystal

Verreries Doyen – “Kursaal” Set of 8 Art Deco Crystal Champagne & Cocktail Coupes – Belgium, 1930s – Catalogue Reference No Reserve Price An elegant set of eight Art Deco champagne and cocktail coupes by the Belgian glass manufacturer Verreries Doyen, dating from the 1930s. The glasses belong to the “Kursaal” collection, specifically the Jambe Courte (short-stemmed) version, featuring the delicate Taille Mate No. 392 decoration, as documented in the original factory catalogue. Crafted from beautifully transparent crystalline glass (lead-free crystal), the coupes feature wide, gently flared bowls resting on short, elegantly proportioned stems and circular feet. Their refined silhouettes perfectly capture the understated sophistication of the Art Deco period. The most distinctive feature is the delicate matte-cut decoration, consisting of gracefully intersecting curved lines and stylised leaf-shaped motifs. The contrast between the transparent glass and the softly frosted decoration creates a subtle interplay of light and texture, giving the glasses an exceptionally refined appearance. Originally designed for elegant table settings, these versatile coupes are perfect for serving champagne, classic cocktails, sorbets, ice cream, or sophisticated desserts. Their timeless design makes them equally suitable for contemporary entertaining and traditional Art Deco table arrangements. The exact model is illustrated in the original Verreries Doyen catalogue under the name “Kursaal – Jambe Courte – Taille Mate 392”, as shown in the accompanying photographs. This important historical reference confirms the model’s identification and its authentic connection to the factory’s production. A beautiful and collectible set of eight matching glasses, combining the elegance of Belgian Art Deco design with the delicate craftsmanship of traditional decorative glassmaking. In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era. Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors. Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage. Will be carefully packaged, well protected and insured
