Doyen “Floralies” Art Deco Vase — Rare Blue Hand-Blown Glass, Belgium, 1930s An elegant and highly collectible Art Deco vase produced by the Belgian glassworks Doyen in Havré-Ville (Mons) during the 1930s. This model belongs to the celebrated Floralies collection and is documented in the original Doyen catalogue under reference No. 1251 (230 mm), confirming its historical authenticity and its place within one of the factory’s most distinctive Art Deco ranges. Made of beautiful deep blue glass, the vase features a bold sculptural silhouette composed of pronounced horizontal rounded ribs that create a striking rhythmic pattern. Its generously proportioned body gradually narrows towards the base, while the upper section culminates in an elegantly flared neck. The combination of flowing curves, repeated geometric elements and perfectly balanced proportions beautifully reflects the streamlined aesthetic of the Art Deco period. The rich, transparent blue glass enhances the sculptural quality of the design, creating fascinating reflections and variations in colour depending on the surrounding light. What makes this example particularly desirable is its vibrant deep blue colour. Blue examples of Doyen glass are considerably less frequently encountered than more familiar colours, making this an especially attractive piece for collectors of Belgian Art Deco glass. Standing approximately 23 cm high, the vase has an impressive decorative presence. Its architectural silhouette and intense blue colour make it equally suitable for a collection of historical glass or as a striking statement piece in a contemporary interior. A beautiful and well-documented example of Belgian Art Deco glass, combining Doyen’s distinctive Floralies design, elegant hand-blown craftsmanship and an exceptionally attractive deep blue colour. Its sculptural character and timeless geometric elegance make it a remarkable decorative object from the 1930s. In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era. Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors. Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage.
