Victorian Sapphire and Diamond Ring in Silver on Gold, c. 1890

The language of gemstones, known as gem lore, was ubiquitous in England in the 19th century and gave pieces of jewellery a deeper meaning. It was not only the beauty of the stones that counted, but also the messages they carried in their symbolism. The sapphire, for example, was seen as a symbol of fidelity, while the diamond, as the hardest mineral on earth, stood for eternity. This ring, created around 1890, is an impressive example of how both meanings were combined in one piece of jewellery. Three facet-cut natural sapphires sparkle in the center. They are framed by twelve old-cut diamonds. The gemstones are set in silver, while the ring itself is made of high-carat gold. The antique ring combines beautiful materials with a symbolism that tells of love, loyalty and eternity. It is a poetic testimony to the Victorian era and at the same time a piece of jewellery that can still be considered an ideal engagement ring today.
