Viking Era Bronze Golden-bronze wall sconce with...

Gilded bronze applique with zoomorphic decoration – Viking Age, 9th–11th centuries AD. An interesting applique made of a copper/brass alloy, with a circular body and three perforated lugs arranged radially, probably intended for fastening or articulation within a belt, harness or accoutrement system. The obverse preserves substantial traces of gilding, upon which a stylized zoomorphic decoration develops, possibly representing a bird or fantastical creature, executed in relief and incision. The composition and the fastening system recall the tradition of European early medieval metalworking. It shows a dark patina, small areas of oxidation and surface wear, still retaining a notable portion of the original gilding. Proposed chronology: 9th–11th centuries AD Material: bronze / gilded copper alloy Dimensions: 38 × 43 × 2 mm Condition: archaeological conservation, with wear and partial loss of gilding.
