Viking Era Bronze The Merchant’s Solar Treasure —...

The Merchant’s Solar Treasure — Polyhedral Trade Weight with Ring-and-Dot Motifs. A striking bronze polyhedral object, likely used as a trade weight by a merchant operating within the commercial networks connecting Scandinavia, the British Isles, continental Europe and the Islamic world. The object is cast in a distinctive multi-faceted form, its faces decorated with deeply recessed concentric ring-and-dot motifs. These repeating, sun-like patterns give the piece a powerful visual character, bringing geometric precision and decorative craftsmanship together. With no central perforation, the object differs from a bead or spindle whorl. Its solid construction supports its interpretation as a portable merchant’s weight, recalling a trading world in which silver was weighed rather than simply counted and merchants carried compact balances and sets of weights. Beyond its practical role, the detailed ornamentation gives the piece an appeal that extends beyond an everyday tool. Each decorated facet invites closer examination, highlighting the relationship between commerce and craftsmanship. The green and brown patina accentuates the recessed circular designs and lends depth to the surface. Its compact form and distinctive decoration make it an engaging piece for collectors interested in medieval trade and geometric ornament. Culture: Medieval — Viking Era. Period: Circa 9th–12th century AD. Material: Bronze. Weight: 15 g.
