Viking Age, silver finger ring, formed from a single broad strip of hammered sheet silver, curved into a slightly irregular hoop. The exterior is decorated with double rows of circular punch marks following both the upper and lower edges. The individually applied impressions vary slightly in size, depth and spacing, a testament to the distinctly hand-worked character. Outside diameter: ± 22,2 mm Maximum height: ± 9,7 mm Condition: good, solid and wearable condition. The silver displays an attractive aged surface with deposits and signs of wear consistent with age and use. Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher. -> Punch decoration allowed Viking silversmiths to create rhythmic patterns with a small selection of simple tools. The repeated impressions caught the light and enlivened an otherwise plain silver surface. Some broad Viking finger rings appear to have been miniature versions of the ribbon-like silver arm-rings worn or carried during the same period, connecting personal ornament with the wider Scandinavian tradition of worked silver jewellery. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics. Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material. Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
