Vintage Brooch by Theodor Fahrner with Marcasites & Synthetic Spinels, ca. 1955

"The beauty of clothing is enhanced to an extraordinary degree by the distinctive effect of Fahrner jewellery. No lady of taste will want to do without it in the future." (From a brochure of the company Theodor Fahrner from the 1920s) Salesmen with large sample cases presented the new products developed in Pforzheim to local jewelers every year. One such sample case, full of unworn Fahrner jewelry, had lain untouched in an attic for the last 40 years or more until it was offered to us. It contained samples of almost every series from about 1919 until the company's dissolution in 1979, most marked with a model number or the "Original Fahrner" seal. The brooch presented here is from this collection. It is therefore unworn and perfectly preserved. The brooch shows up in the form of concave and convex curved crosshatched bands. Small marcasites are scattered on them and play with the incident light. Four synthetic spinels set additional accents in a beautiful bottle green. The jewelry is made of silver that has been lightly gilded. This type of gilding is called "antique gilding" by Fahrner. It has a cool, slightly greenish-gold tone, by which Fahrner jewelry can be easily identified. The brooch was probably executed in the 1950s, because it speaks the formal language of that era.
