Vintage Dome Ring with Sapphire & Diamonds in Granulated Gold, c. 1955 & Later

This ring was created in the era of the economic miracle. It is handcrafted from high-carat gold. The showpiece arches high above the finger. An intense blue sapphire from Ceylon shines amidst ornaments formed from small golden dots and a ring of shimmering rose-cut diamonds. The unusual way of decorating the ring is called granulation. Tiny gold beads are soldered onto the ring, creating a unique sculptural effect through the interplay of light and shadow. The challenge is to hit the melting point of the gold exactly - because a little too much heat and the filigree work melts irretrievably. The technique of granulation was already developed in ancient times, with the Etruscans in particular excelling in this field. However, this knowledge was lost in the Middle Ages - and it was not until the 19th century that it experienced a renaissance: first in Italy in the course of the rediscovery of ancient jewellery in the 1860s, and then again in Germany in the 20th century. Johann Michael Wilm from Munich and Elisabeth Treskow from Cologne created granulation work of the highest quality in the 1930s and established a fashion that flourished in the post-war period: Enclosed is an advertisement from the 1950s. This ring dates from this period. It was created in Germany, but unfortunately it had lost its center stone over the generations. In keeping with the high quality of the craftsmanship, we have therefore had the high-quality sapphire set, which we were able to purchase from a collection of vintage gemstones shortly beforehand. The ring shines and shines again in all its beauty.
