Vintage Earrings With Rubies & Diamonds in Gold, c. 1985

Radiant red, gleaming gold and sparkling white diamonds – this pair of earrings exudes vitality and optimism. The design arranges square-cut rubies in three lines that form a single sweeping band, creating the basic shape of the jewel. A second, narrower band of diamonds is laid across the rubies. The elegant curve of the forms lends the design plasticity and makes it pleasing to the eye from every angle. The rubies glow with an intense red that harmonises beautifully with the warmth of the yellow gold. The bright diamond accents complement this interplay of colours. The fact that the diamonds are also set in yellow gold, and not – as is so often the case in antique jewellery – in platinum, is a design choice that is typical of the 1980s. On account of its elegant design, we therefore date the pair to this period. The earrings can be worn as clips, but they are also fitted with posts for even greater security in the ear. The posts can be folded in and out, depending on whether or not the wearer has pierced ears. We discovered the pair in Hamburg.
