Ilias Lalaounis was one of the jewellery designers who decisively shaped the image of jewellery in the second half of the 20th century. The Greek trained his eyes on the gold jewellery of past cultures and made it his business to interpret not only old forms but also age-old techniques such as granulation and hand-hammered surfaces according to the taste of the time. The present set from the years around 1990 fitted ideally into the spirit of the times, for people loved high-carat gold jewellery that, with reduced designs, thrived above all on high-gloss surface finishes. The set consists of a choker with a matching pendant. The simple hoop with rounded corners is rigid but can be flexibly bent open. The large, shiny polished pendant appears like a new interpretation of the classic meander motif, which has virtually become a badge of Greek culture. Its intricate lines, however, also bring to mind the labyrinth of Minotaur, which the hero Theseus was only able to leave with the help of Ariadne and her legendary thread. Indeed, Lalaounis was inspired by Neolithic art for the pieces in the "Choreographism" series, to which this pendant also belongs. Jewellery pieces by Lalaounis are design classics of the 20th century; he was able to inspire style icons such as Liz Taylor and Jackie O for his creations. Our set comes to us from a collection of high-quality jewellery that was created from around the 1960s onwards. The first owner was a returning customer of Lalaounis, and even received personal silver Christmas cards from him.
