Vishnu standing with four arms in ancient bronze, an Indo-Hindu devotional sculpture, South India, 19th-20th century. Devotional bronze sculpture depicting Vishnu in an upright position, in a solemn frontal presentation that is perfectly recognizable within traditional Vaishnavite iconography. The deity is rendered with four arms, the rear hands poised to support the canonical attributes, readable as references to the discus (chakra) and the conch, while the front hands are arranged in gestures of protection and offering, in keeping with a votive bronze tradition intended for private worship. The face, with gathered, compact features, is topped by a tall conical headdress, while the body, slender and harmoniously posed, features essential ornaments, a short tiered dhoti incised with bands, and a moulded base that provides stability and presence to the whole. The work shows a traditional fusion destined for domestic or devotional use, with sober and well-calibrated execution quality, particularly appreciable in its iconographic clarity, overall symmetry, and concise rendering. The surface preserves an ancient patina of brown-golden tones with widespread green oxidations and accretions, elements that emphasize its historical character and the authenticity of use, without compromising the legibility of the figure. In terms of type, formal rendering, and overall taste, the sculpture can be assigned to South India, or more broadly to the central-southern area of the subcontinent, in a chronological span placing it in the 19th century. This is a piece with strong collectible appeal, suitable for both Oriental art collections and for groups of Hindu religious bronzes, thanks to its clearly identifiable iconography, its pleasing patina, and its highly decorative ornamental presence.
