The gouache is applied fast and thick, the drawing in black over the colour, in the lyrical post-Cubist manner Botticini made his own. Vittorio Botticini (1909–1978), born and died in Brescia, trained at the Cignaroli Academy in Verona and at the Brera, and became one of the most original Lombard painters of the mid-century — a ‘paladin of modernity’, in the words of his monographer Roberto Ferrari — fusing Cézanne and Picasso with the colour of the Venetian tradition.
