W.E. Hill (William Ely Hill) was an influential American illustrator and cartoonist (1887–1962) best known for his satirical "Among Us Mortals" Sunday comic page, which was featured in the New York Tribune for decades. His work stood out for blending caricature with photo-realism, creating highly relatable—and often gently mocking—portraits of everyday American middle-class life. Key highlights of his career include:Among Us Mortals: A highly successful weekly full-page illustration series running from 1916 through the mid-20th century, which became a staple of Sunday newspaper comics. Classic Optical Illusions: In 1915, Hill created the iconic dual-image optical illusion My Wife and My Mother-in-Law for Puck magazine.Early Career: Before his famous comic page, he provided artwork for major humor publications like Life and Puck. His detailed, observational style of caricature greatly influenced the visual culture of the "Flapper era" and early 20th-century Americana.
