There are gemstones whose beauty is apparent at first glance—and there are those few that reveal their true nature only as the light changes. Sapphires with a pronounced color change are among these great rarities of nature. Depending on whether they are illuminated by natural or artificial light, their appearance changes in an almost mysterious way. A delicate pastel blue transforms into a velvety violet—a natural spectacle that makes them particularly coveted stones. As early as the 19th century, color-change sapphires were considered unique phenomena in mineralogy. Long before their optical properties could be scientifically explained, they were prized for their rarity. To this day, they remain among the most sought-after varieties within the sapphire family. At the center of this ring is a 5.115-carat natural color-change sapphire, whose faceted cushion cut captures the light in a striking way. In daylight, the gemstone appears in a delicate, pastel blue, while under artificial light it shifts to a soft violet. Two trilliant-cut diamonds totaling approximately 0.40 carats flank the center stone, their clean lines harmoniously blending into the 18-karat white gold ring band. Sapphires of this quality are extremely rare. While the majority of stones available on the market are heated or otherwise treated to enhance their colour and clarity, this sapphire is completely untreated. To unequivocally document its exceptional qualities, we had it examined by two independent gemological laboratories. Both reports confirm not only its natural origin—with no evidence of heat treatment—but also its provenance from Madagascar. It is precisely this provenance that makes the stone particularly interesting. The island’s rich sapphire deposits were not discovered and developed until the late 20th century. In particular, the region around Ilakaka—now known as the “City of Sapphires”—has yielded gemstones of exceptional clarity and a remarkable variety of hues. However, color-change sapphires of this size and quality are considered exceptions even there. A natural, untreated color-changing sapphire from Madagascar weighing over five carats is one of nature’s truly rare creations. The ring came to us from southern France, where it was crafted in the city of Montpellier around the turn of the millennium.
