Whitespotted Eagle Ray Jaw - Aetobatus narinari - 13 cm...

An impressive jaw of the Spotted Eagle Ray (Aetobatus narinari), showcasing one of the most specialized feeding structures found among cartilaginous fishes. This authentic specimen clearly illustrates the powerful crushing dental plates that enable the species to feed on hard-shelled prey such as mollusks, crustaceans, and sea urchins. Unlike sharks, eagle rays possess broad, pavement-like teeth fused into solid plates rather than rows of pointed teeth. This specimen beautifully displays both the upper and lower dental plates, whose smooth ridged surfaces fit together with remarkable precision to generate immense crushing force. The open framework of the jaw contrasts elegantly with the massive ivory-colored tooth plates, creating a naturally sculptural composition that is both scientifically fascinating and visually striking. Warm cream and honey tones further enhance the specimen's organic beauty while preserving the authentic appearance of the cartilage and dentition. This specimen originates from small-scale local subsistence fishing, ensuring an authentic connection to traditional coastal fisheries rather than targeted commercial collection. An outstanding natural history display, ideal for collectors of marine anatomy, educational collections, museums, or cabinet of curiosities.
