Willem van Scheijndel (1952-2017) - z.t.

This colorful, abstract painting immediately stands out for its strong horizontal composition and pronounced color contrast. The image is composed of broad zones of deep black and dark blue, bright turquoise and warm yellow-orange, evoking associations with a landscape where sky, water and land meet. The paint is applied freely and expressively, with visible brush and spatula strokes and small accents in red, white and other colors. It is precisely the combination of large color fields and lively, almost fragmentary details that gives the work both calm and dynamism. Although the depiction is abstract, there remains enough recognizability for the viewer to discover in the composition a landscape or memory themselves. Willem van Schijndel is a Dutch visual artist who is best known for his colorful, expressive painting. In his work color plays a leading role and recognizable elements are often reduced to simplified shapes and bold fields. His paintings thus occupy the boundary between figuration and abstraction: a landscape or other depiction can serve as a starting point, but is primarily a means to explore mood, rhythm and color interaction. Characteristic is the energetic painting technique, in which different layers of paint, textures and contrasting color accents come together to produce a lively and direct image.
