DESCRIPTION: I present at auction a GREAT CLASSIC of the grand epic of the New World: "HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO : with a preliminary view of the ancient Mexican Civilization, and the life of the conqueror, HERNANDO CORTES", an indispensable classic for any traveling, great explorations, discoveries or history library. This magnificent work, complete in 3 volumes, magnificently adorned with the coat of arms of Hernán Cortés on each spine, revives the dizzying adventure of the first Europeans entering the heart of the unknown, uncharted and mysterious Aztec empire. Our copy stands out for its rich and fascinating apparatus of engravings, composed of detailed exploration maps unfolding in steel engravings and splendid portraits engraved out of text. Delving into its pages is to embark on a genuine journey through time and into virgin territories: the work features an impressive fold-out map tracing the bold and dangerous exploration route of Cortés’s troops toward Tenochtitlan, the fold-out map of the legendary Valley of Mexico with its lakes and defensive islets, the majestic engraved portrait of Hernán Cortés equipped with his battle armor, the imposing portrait of Emperor Moctezuma adorned with his imperial attributes, and the engraved facsimile of the signature and autograph of the legendary Spanish conqueror. Furthermore, the work delves with striking detail into the darker and more fascinating aspects of the Aztec civilization, dedicating sobering pages to the bloody rites and HUMAN SACRIFICES celebrated atop the pyramids and temples of Tenochtitlan to appease its fierce deities. This masterpiece was written by the eminent American historian William H. Prescott (1796–1859), who managed to masterfully capture both the fascination of expeditions into unknown lands and the dramatic clash between two irreconcilable worlds. Its reading is vibrant and thrilling: the author narrates events with rapid tempo, transporting the reader to impenetrable jungles, bloody battles, ambushes and diplomatic encounters with chiefs and warrior Indians, combining historical rigor with the emotion of the best travel and adventure book.
