Beautiful oil study on canvas depicting a young girl in a blue dress. Through its painterly handling and sensitivity, this work is part of William Malherbe's post-Impressionist universe, a painter renowned for his figures, portraits, nudes and sunlit scenes. Born in Bucharest in 1884 and settled in Paris, Malherbe gained significant recognition from the 1930s. He exhibited notably at the Salon d’Automne and was represented by the prestigious Durand-Ruel gallery, a historic player in the recognition of Impressionism and a dealer of Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley. After moving to the United States in 1939, Malherbe regularly exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, where his work enjoyed considerable success. His painting is notably compared to Bonnard and late Renoir. A work by Malherbe, Nature morte aux anémones (1923), is kept at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This canvas is particularly interesting as a study, and not merely as a preparatory sketch: it possesses a true pictorial presence and testifies to the artist’s color sensitivity. It was catalogued as a work by William Malherbe by Bernaerts Auctioneers at the March 20, 2018 sale, under the title Meisje met blauw kleed, with the same dimensions of 60.5 × 37.5 cm and the note “oil study on canvas, unsigned.” Dimensions of the canvas: 60.5 × 37.5 cm. Dimensions with frame: 46 × 69 cm.
