This is a smaller one of three paintings that depicted Sterne’s Maria, in this case where the troublesome goat is replaced by a dog. Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and is providing good support. Fine craquelure is present across the image but the surface appears to be stable overall. Occasional superficial scratches. A small area of discoloured varnish is visible in natural light to the left along the upper edge. Inspection under UV reveals several areas of retouching, including to the sitter's face, hair and decolletage; to her torso and across her skirt. Small areas of overpaint are evident to the dog and there is some strengthening to the trees, foliage and ground around her. The image presents a cloudy varnish and surface dirt.
