WINGU TINGIMA, Nyapari, 2006

WINGU TINGIMA Pitjantjatjara language, c.1920 - 2010 Nyapari, 2006 acrylic on linen 96 x 66 cm bears inscription verso: TPWT06078, Wingu Tingima, Nyapari 2006, Tjungu Palya PROVENANCE Tjungu Palya, South Australia, Cat No. TPWT06078 Marshall Arts, South Australia Private Collection, New South Wales Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tjungu Palya Wingu Tingima was born around 1920 at Nyumum, a rock hole near Kuru Ala, close to the borders of South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. This Country, and particularly the Kungkarrakalpa or Minyma Tjuta (Seven Sisters) Tjukurrpa associated with Kuru Ala, remained central to her life and painting practice. Tingima learned Tjukurrpa, Law and inma (ceremonial song and dance) from her mother and senior female relatives, alongside traditional practices including carving and spinning hair string for ceremonial belts and manguri (head rings). As a teenager she travelled with her family to Ernabella, where she later worked alongside other Anangu women at Ernabella Arts. Tingima subsequently moved west to Irrunytju, where she was instrumental in establishing Irrunytju Arts in 2001. She later settled at Nyapari and, in 2005, joined senior artists including Jimmy Baker, Ginger Wikilyiri and Eileen Yaritja Stevens in establishing Tjungu Palya. This painting is distinguished by their rich fields of red, white, pink and green, layered with rhythmic dotting and strong linear structures. These forms reference women's inma, body painting and hair-string belts, bringing together Tingima's knowledge of ceremony and her enduring connection to Country. At the heart of her practice remained Kuru Ala and the Seven Sisters Tjukurrpa she carried throughout her life. © WINGU TINGIMA / Copyright Agency, 2026
