The painting was created by the six women together, at some distance from the men, allowing them to speak, sing and share the knowledge associated with this women's story freely as the work developed. The story follows the Seven Sisters as they travel towards Tjintirlkara, pursued across Country by Wati Nyiru, an older man. Nyiru has heard the women singing songs that should not be heard by men and, affected by what he has heard, relentlessly follows the sisters, seeking to take one of them as his wife. The painting centres upon Tjintirlkara, the place towards which the women are travelling. Within the composition are the camp of Nyiru and the camp of Kampukurda, the eldest of the sisters and the focus of his pursuit. The surrounding landscape is shaped by the movement and presence of the women, and by traces of Nyiru as he follows them across Country. Held within Minyma Tjuta is extensive knowledge of Country, relationships, love, responsibility and women's Law. Through their knowledge of the story and their responsibility for its continuation, the senior women carry and pass on this knowledge across generations. Minyma Tjuta is one of the major stories of Spinifex Country, forming part of an immense ancestral narrative that travels across a vast tract of Australia, from the Coolgardie region in the west, through Spinifex Country and towards the Flinders Ranges in the east. © Estelle Hogan / Copyright Agency, 2026 | © Judith Donaldson / Copyright Agency, 2026 | © Kathleen Kanta Donegan / Copyright Agency, 2026 | © Tjaruwa Woods / Copyright Agency, 2026
