Wrestling / Nîmes / Amphitheater - Lot 165

Wrestling / Nîmes / Amphitheater Nîmes Engraving after a work by the Rouargue brothers, ca. 1830–40, printed by F. Chardon (Paris), published by Furne (Paris) In the ancient arena around 1830, two wrestlers face off in a match. This striking image reminds us that Nismes and its surrounding region (Beaucaire, Arles, La Calmette) were major centers of wrestling in France during the 1850s. The great writer Frédéric Mistral (1830–1914) would bear witness to this golden age of southern wrestling
