Yang Xiang

The color woodcut sheet depicts Yang Xiang, a figure from the Chinese collection “Twenty-four Examples of Filial Piety.” The series illustrates traditional virtue stories, in which love and devotion to one’s parents are central. Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the most important Japanese ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century, combines the traditional narrative with his expressive visual language and a dynamic composition. https://www.artic.edu/artworks/149895/yang-xiang-yo-kyo-from-the-series-twenty-four-paragons-of-filial-piety-in-china-morokoshi-nijushiko
