KLM Royal Dutch Airlines On 7 October 1919, the 'Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij voor Nederland en Koloniën' was established by deed at the notary office of Mr. H. Stoop in The Hague. The starting capital of 1.2 million guilders was funded by eight businessmen, including Frits Fentener van Vlissingen and Anton Kröller. The lieutenant-pilot Albert Plesman became administrator and later director. Queen Wilhelmina granted the title 'Royal' to KLM in formation on 12 September 1919. The first KLM office was opened on 21 October 1919 on Herengracht in The Hague. KLM's first commercial flight was operated on 17 May 1920 from London to Amsterdam. When it landed at Schiphol, the leased De Havilland DH.16 G-EALU (also known as DH 9A), flown by English pilot H. 'Jerry' Shaw, was on board. In the following years the fleet grew with aircraft of its own, mostly Fokker planes, and flights expanded to more European destinations. KLM flew to Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia) for the first time on 1 October 1924, marking the longest route before World War II. During this period KLM rose to become the third-largest airline in the world, after Pan American Airways and Imperial Airways. In 1945, after World War II, KLM resumed its scheduled services and started in 1946 as the first European airline to operate scheduled services to the United States. The service to the Indies was also restored, flying with aircraft such as the Dakota and the Lockheed Constellation. In 1960 the first jet aircraft was added to the fleet, the Douglas DC-8, followed by the smaller Douglas DC-9 for European traffic. In 1971 KLM introduced the Boeing 747 (still with the short upper deck set up as a bar) and in 1972 the DC-10, the beginning of KLM's widebody fleet. The network continued to expand and eventually included nonstop destinations on all continents. Despite a small home market, KLM grew to become the fourth airline in Europe. For domestic air travel, NLM CityHopper was established in 1966, and from the mid-1970s also operated regional flights in Europe. Since 1991, after a merger with Netherlines, this subsidiary has flown under the name KLM CityHopper. KLM has also become increasingly dominant in the Dutch aviation sector with stakes in Transavia and Martinair, which became wholly-owned subsidiaries in 2003 and 2008 respectively. Cooperation with other carriers became increasingly important. Since 1993 all flights between the US and Europe have been operated as a joint venture with Northwest Airlines (which merged into Delta Air Lines). In the 1990s there were discussions with other European carriers, including British Airways and Alitalia, about far-reaching cooperation and even a merger. This ultimately resulted on 5 May 2004 in the merger of KLM with Air France to form Air France–KLM. Through this merger the company was also included in the SkyTeam airline alliance. On 27 February 2019 the Dutch state owned 5.92% of KLM's shares. Shipping with tracking. Search: flugzeug trolley catering trolley galley equipment airline cart
