Emil Busch (born August 6, 1820 in Berlin; died April 1, 1888 in Rathenow) was a German industrialist in precision mechanics and optics. He was involved in the invention of the wide-angle lens. In 1868 Busch was appointed Royal Councillor of Commerce by the king for his merits. In 1872 he transformed the company into a joint-stock company to facilitate the necessary investments. It did so with the help of the Quistorp & Co. bank. The share capital of the corporation amounted to 275,000 thalers. In the subsequently formed Rathenow Optical Industry Institute, formerly Emil Busch A.-G., Emil Busch thereafter held a high position as a “Delegate of the Supervisory Board” and as a Director. The company later achieved a dominant market position. Thanks to unofficial understandings with Zeiss, it restricted free competition. Carl Zeiss had his son Roderich undertake commercial training with Busch. In turn, Busch contributed to a study that enabled the state to grant Zeiss’s Glass Technology Laboratory a subsidy of 35,000 thalers. Busch, who never studied at university, died in 1888. Because of him and because of Johann and Eduard Duncker, Rathenow became a byword for high-quality optical instruments. The theater glass impresses with its excellent preservation state. Easily adjustable focus and alignment—clear lenses—dust-free, cleaned! Minimal patina. Brass, gold-plated, and mother-of-pearl wrapping. Signed on the bottom: Busch!
