FIRST EDITION SIGNED BY AVEDON - Quarto, 14-1/4 inches high by 11-1/4 inches wide. Light brown buckram titled in black on the covers and the spine, with full-page black & white photographic illustrations mounted on the front and rear covers, in its original acetate dust wrapper. 172 unnumbered pages, with profuse full-page and double-page black & white photographic illustrations of Avedon's evocative portraits. Near fine. First edition. Boldly signed and dated by Richard Avedon on the front endpaper: "Avedon '89". At the request of the director of Fort Worth's Amon Carter Museum, in 1978 Richard Avedon undertook an assignment to photograph a series of portraits which would capture the spirit of the American West. From 1979 through 1984, Avedon traveled from Texas to Idaho, visiting 189 towns where he photographed people at state fairs, factories, slaughterhouses, ranches, etc. His subjects, ranging from ranchers, drifters, coal miners, waitresses as opposed to the stereotypes of the manly cowboy were the antithesis of the Western myth predominant at the time. These portraits were even more evocative for being photographed against a white background instead of grand landscapes. The American fashion and portrait photographer Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was eulogized thus by the New York Times obituary page: "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century."Läs mer

AN EARLY RARE ORIGINAL FOUR-PANEL BROCHURE ILLUSTRATED...
- Quarto, 11 inches high by 7-3/4 inches wide. A folding brochure consisting of 4 panels advertising Calvin Klein's "CK One" eau de toilette fragrance. The front and rear of the brochure are illustrated with monochrome photographs of the CK One bottle. Opened up, the brochure depicts 2 young women in casual attire facing one another. The brochure finally unfolds to reveal Steven Meisel's black and white photograph of 14 sexually ambiguous young people. Meisel's 11 inch high by 36 inch wide image was inspired by Richard Avedon's famous 1969 photograph of "Andy Warhol and Members of the Factory". Tiny staple holes along the center fold would suggest that this rare brochure was likely extracted from a periodical of the period. Very good. According to a an article on the Highsnobiety site entitled "20 Years of CK One: The Grit Minimal Revival", "The Calvin Klein One campaigns of the 1990s were some of the most striking and controversial of the decade, and have since become a piece of classic fashion advert history. CK was one of the first fashion brands with a clean, and minimal but edgy approach to a unisex fragrance aimed at Generation X".Läs mer

Richard Avedon föddes den 15 maj 1923 i New York City, USA. Hans mor, Anna Avedon, kom från en familj av klädestillverkare och hans far ägde en klädbutik vid namn Avedon Fifth Avenue. Avedon inspirerades starkt av sina föräldrars klädesföretag och under sin uppväxt skapades ett stort intresse för mode. Avedon brukade fotograferade kläderna i sin faders affär och vid 12 års ålder gick han med i YMHA (Young Men's Hebrew Association) Camera Club.Avedon gick på DeWitt Clinton High School i New York City där han, utöver sitt intresse för mode och fotografi, intresserade sig mycket för poesi. Efter att ha tagit studenten 1941 kom Avedon in på Columbia University där han studerade filosofi och poesi men efter endast ett år hoppade han av för att tjäna United States Merchant Marine under andra världskriget. Under två år, 1942-1944, arbetade Avedon inom marinen där hans huvuduppgift var att ta identifikationskort av sjömännen.Efter sin tid inom flottan började Avedon på New School for Social Research i New York City där han studerade fotografi under Alexey Brodovitch, den konstnärlige ledaren för modemagasinet Harper’s Bazaar. Avedon och Brodovitch blev snabbt nära vänner och Avedon blev anställd som fotograf på tidningen. Efter en tid på tidningen tilldelades Avedon ansvaret att täcka höst- och vårkollektionerna i Paris tillsammans med sin kollega Carmel Snow. Avedons uppgift var att, ute i staden, ta fotografier av modellerna i de nya modekläderna. Under slutet av 1940-talet och början av 1950-talet tog Avedon eleganta, lekfulla och spontana svartvita fotografier som visade upp det senaste modet.År 1955 skrev Avedon mode- och fotohistoria genom att ta det ikoniska fotografiet ”Dovima with Elephants” föreställande tidens mest kända modell iklädd en svart aftonklänning från Dior, poserande vid två elefanter från Cirque d'Hiver i Paris.Efter sin 20 år långa karriär vid Harper’s Bazaar började Avedon jobba som fotograf för Vouge där han stannade fram till 1990. Avedon gick sedan vidare till att arbeta som fotograf på The New Yorker där han arbetade fram till sin död den 1 oktober 2004, 81 år gammal.
