TORY. — ANTONINUS (Augustus). *Itinerarium Provinciarum omni - Lot 78

TORY. — ANTONINUS (Augustus). *Itinerarium Provinciarum omnium Antonini Augusti*. Paris, Henri Estienne, 1512. In-8, contemporary vellum, handwritten title on the spine, and small label. First edition of this Itinerary attributed to Emperor Antoninus Pius (1st–2nd centuries). It was published by the humanist and typographer Geoffroy Tory and printed in red and black. (Mortimer, French Books, no. 326.) In his edition, Tory collated two manuscripts [one from the 9th century and the other from the 15th century], and in his working copy—recently rediscovered at the Orléans media library—he employed a comprehensive system of colored markings for the critical apparatus [he uses three colors in this manuscript: red, pink, and blue]. The initial “A” that opens the text already features the compass, a tool of proportion that Tory would come to cherish so dearly. The motto “civis” (“citizen”), which Tory included in all his works at that time—a sense of duty toward others that would never leave him—even takes the form of a monogram for the first time. The *Antonin* is the most accomplished of his early books in terms of layout (cat. Geoffroy Tory, Printer to Francis I, 2011, pp. 23–24). This itinerarium takes us along the roads of the vast Roman Empire—in Italy, of course, but also in Spain, Palestine, Crimea, and Egypt—indicating the stops and distances between cities. A short section titled *Itinerarium maritimum* covers military and maritime routes (ff. 83v°–85v°). This is the third work on cosmography published by Tory (following a Pomponius Mela published by Gourmont in 1507 and a Cosmography by Pius II published by Estienne in 1509); more importantly, it is the second work he entrusted to Estienne and the smallest of their joint publications. Contains a handwritten ex-libris from the period in red ink on the title page. From the Giannalisa Feltrinelli Library (2011, no. 2112). A small marginal water stain in the first quire; small stains on ff. A5, B3, and H3. Small marginal loss without damage to the text on ff. 79 and 80; folding and printing defect on f. N2. Binding worn and stained, with small losses of vellum; loose stitching.
